Indigestion Tablets May Be Linked To Dementia

Indigestion Tablets May Be Linked To Dementia

A team of German researchers have established a link using insurance data from over 70,000 people over the age of 75.

Their study showed that elderly people who take proton pump inhibitor drugs, or PPIs, are 44 per cent more likely to suffer from dementia than those who do not take the drugs.
However, they said that their study had limitations, that is because they couldn't separate other risk factors.

The drugs, which include omeprazole and lansoprazole which do not need a prescription are taken by millions of people.
These drugs restrict stomach acid and help people with gastroesophageal reflux and peptic ulcers.
However, other indigestion remedies such as antacid treatments which neutralise excess stomach acid are not thought to be a problem.

Always consult your doctor if you have any concerns regarding your treatments.

They may have a point here but as its been said the tests are non really conclusive.
Its the long-term use of acid inhibitors that can cause vitamin B12 deficiency.
It seems to be this factor that can lead to dementia.
Some conditions caused by the deficiency of vitamin B12 are irreversible.

I use these indigestion tablets every now and then.
I always carry a couple when I go for a drinking session.
I will have to think about taking them now.
After all, if I act now I can't complain later on.
What was that you said again - I didn't quite hear you.

I thought these indigestion remedies were safe.
I always viewed them as "friendly" medicine.
Looks like I will use these drugs as a last resort only.
I will not be reading any newspapers today, its my day off!
