Food that need the fridge - others don't need chilling
Certain items of food that we eat need to be put in the fridge and some don't.
We may have always been making a mistake of keeping some food cold when it's not necessary.
Some food can be kept in a cupboard and do not need to be put in the fridge.
Here is a list of some that need a fridge and some that can be safely stored in the cupboard.
Ketchup - good old tomato ketchup needs to be chilled once opened unlike in the olden days when it wasn't necessary.
The reason here that years ago it was packed with salt and that acted like a preservative.
Nowadays with a move to add less salt to food, it needs the fridge.
Chocolate - this can be kept safely in the cupboard and never in the fridge but if the confectionery has a creamy filling - fridge it.
Butter - surprisingly, can be safely stored in the cupboard and it's easier to spread!
This is because the cream used to make butter is pasteurised and besides, butter is nearly all fat.
Pasteurised food repels bacteria.
Eggs - keep eggs in the fridge even though they are not chilled in the shops.
The Food Standards Agency recommends this because salmonella could be a problem here with changes in temperatures.
Mayonnaise - keep this in the fridge as it contains cream and eggs.
Marmite/Vegemite - keep in the cupboard because of the high amounts of salt.
Jam/Marmalade - store in the cupboard. The trapped air in the jar after being in the fridge can cause condensation to build up which attracts bacteria.
Cheese - fridge it! Once cheese is opened, cheese can be exposed to micro-organisms in the air.
Bananas - cupboard but in a cool place to ripen better.
Bread - cupboard not fridge. However bread can be frozen for up to 3 months.
Tomatoes - store in a cupboard.
Peanut butter - cupboard but some other nut butters should be put in the fridge.
Grapes and berries - keep these in the fridge because at room temperature they will shrivel up.
Potatoes - cupboard but in a cool place.
Apples - store in a fridge if you want them to last longer.
Onions - store in a cool cupboard, if anything to stop other food in the fridge from smelling.
If anyone else can add to the list of foodstuffs here that can benefit from the fridge or cupboards let us know.
