Norway Switchess Off FM Radio To Favour Digital

Norway Switchess Off FM Radio To Favour Digital

In parts of northern Norway, the FM radio transmitters were turned off for good.
Norway has become the first country in the world to turn off FM radio.
They are doing this because they are favouring digital radio instead.
Over the next few months, Norway will switch of the other regions to FM radio.
The country is going digital only for its radio transitions.

However, the Norwegian government has been accused of moving to digital only radio far too quickly.
But the authorities claim that 7 in 10 homes have DAB radios already in the home.
They also say it is better and cheaper.
It is known that maintaining the old FM transmitters is costly and any more money should go into the new technology.

Critics are warning that most cars have no Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radios.
Most Norwegians oppose the move.

Other countries such as the UK, Switzerland and Denmark are all considering the switch to digital radio so are watching this move closely.
The BBC claim that countries should wait until at least 50% of households should possess digital radios before making the move.

So, FM sprang up in the 1950's and has already ran its course.
You would never dream of that happening.

All these frequencies will still remain even if no radio station uses them.
I doubt if all the frequencies such as FM will completely disappear.
I don't think I will get a DAB radio just yet though.
To be honest, I use the MW for Talk Sport in the car and the FM bit hardly gets used.

I won't be rushed into buying a DAB radio for the car.
If they switch off the FM transmitters here in the UK I will just listen to the MW.
Now that's a backward move

Excellent move from the Norwegians.
I have a DAB in my car and sometimes the whole lot goes off.
So, unlike the old FM where you could hear the crackly noise when searching for other stations, you feel so alone when DAB goes off as you hear nothing.
Good move all the same, but if we ever do it I hope they can cover all areas of the country.
